McGriff-Williams Insurance is an independent agency in Gainesville, in business since 1983 and licensed in Florida. We work with established, middle-market construction and service contractors across the state by phone, email and video. Insurance for contractors is our top commercial focus, and we explain every coverage in plain English so you know what you have and why. Where confidence grows is more than our tagline: we want you to feel confident walking into the next bid, audit or renewal.
This page covers the coverages contractors ask about most, plus the tools we offer beyond the policy. It’s general information. For your own program, talk with us.
Who we work with
We focus on established contractors and construction firms, not one-person shops. Typical trades include:
- Site prep and underground utility
- General contractors (residential and commercial)
- Road work and paving
- Electrical, HVAC, plumbing and concrete
- Fencing, pest control and pool contractors
- Material suppliers
If you’re bidding larger work, prequalifying with owners or general contractors, or growing past a basic package policy, you’re in the right place.
Coverages to review
General liability. Protects against claims of bodily injury or property damage arising from your operations, and often includes products and completed operations. Contracts and owners usually set the limits and additional-insured wording they require. We review those requirements against the policy, not just the certificate.
Workers’ compensation. Required for most Florida employers. Your experience modification (mod) multiplies the premium and often shows up in prequalification. We help you understand your mod, review open claims and prepare for premium audits so payroll, subcontractor costs and class codes are documented.
Builders risk. Property insurance for a structure under construction: materials on site, and in some cases materials in transit, from break-ground through completion. It does not include liability. Flood is usually separate. See builders risk insurance for contractors.
Inland marine and equipment. Tools, equipment and materials that move from job to job often fall outside a standard property policy. Inland marine (sometimes called a contractors equipment floater) is designed for that exposure. Ask whether scheduled items, rented equipment and equipment in transit are included.
Commercial auto and fleet. Vehicles titled to the company, driven to job sites or used for business errands belong on a commercial auto policy, not a personal one. Hired and non-owned auto, higher liability limits and fleet practices all matter when crews are on the road every day.
Umbrella. An umbrella sits above your general liability, auto and (when written that way) employers liability. Many contracts call for higher combined limits than a primary policy carries. We check that the umbrella follows the primary forms so there’s no surprise gap.
Contractor’s pollution. A standard general liability policy often limits or excludes pollution, including job-site spills, disturbed contaminated soil and some mold claims. A contractor’s pollution liability policy addresses that gap for firms whose work creates or disturbs environmental exposures. See contractors pollution liability insurance.
Professional liability for construction managers. If you design, manage or supervise work for a fee, a client may claim that a professional error caused a loss. Construction managers and design-builders often carry professional liability (errors and omissions) in addition to general liability.
Surety bonds. Bid, performance and payment bonds are a three-party arrangement that stands behind your promise to perform the work. Public jobs and many private owners require them. Bonding capacity depends on your financials, experience and work on hand. We can walk you through what’s typically asked.
Beyond the policy
Insurance is only part of managing risk. For contractors, we also offer:
- Guidance on reading certificates of insurance (COIs) from your subcontractors and vendors
- Workers’ compensation and general liability audit support
- An employee safety training platform and OSHA support
- A fleet safety program, defensive and distracted driver training, and motor vehicle record (MVR) monitoring
- Access to live HR professionals, plus an employee handbook builder and job description builder
These tools help you document what owners and insurers ask for, and keep claims from becoming the story of your next renewal.
